英文标识笑话百出
广州的英语标识混乱，为人诟病已久。广州市质监局介绍，广东省目前尚未有全省统一的公***场所标志英文译法。目前不少公***场所双语标识的译法存在问题，有些英文译法与中文原意相去甚远。“中式英语标牌”、简单语法的错误，会让国际游客感到困惑，损害广东现代、开放的国际形象。
有关人士介绍，广州大部分的英语标识主要存在两个问题：一是英语用词不合适，前后不一致；二是很多英语标识仍然用的是“汉字打造法”，白云国际机场此前就被媒体曝光出英文标识的问题，如这边的“停车楼”被翻译为“parkinggarage”，而就在相隔不到20米的另一指示牌上，同样是“停车楼”，却被翻译为“carparkbuilding”。在机场出发大厅，“前行30米”的标识直接翻译成了“Goahead30m”，按惯用方法，ahead后面不会跟名词，令外国乘客十分别扭，甚至有点搞笑，其实最简单而直接的表述应该是“30mahead”。
“W.C”含义粗俗
该规范规定，厕所、洗手间和卫生间统一译为“Toilet”，涉及性别时，男厕译为“Gents/Men”；女厕译为“Ladies/Wom鄄en”。原本市民熟悉的公厕代名词“W.C”将被彻底取缔。
有关人士介绍，“W.C”词义本身与“Toilet”区别不大，但是从修辞上说，前者给人的印象粗俗简陋、不太卫生，后者文雅。“WC”是“Water-Closet”（冲水水箱）缩写，现在很多西方国家根本不用“W.C”表示厕所，英语里，“W.C”内涵可以理解为中国话所说的茅坑。
此外，该规范规定，饭店、餐馆全部译为“Restaurant”，而专门供人喝酒、小憩的酒馆、酒店则译为“Wineshop”。
